Why Plant Aruncus
(Goatsbeard)?

Aruncus is an underutilized plant for the moist shade garden.  They still perform well in areas of average moisture, but do not like especially dry areas. They prefer to grow in partial shade, but can grow in sun provided there is enough moisture.  They make a showy display of creamy white flowers from late spring to early summer.  All of the Aruncus are rarely damaged by deer and are extremely hardy (Zone 3). We have chosen 3 different Aruncus that we consider to be very garden worthy plants.  The main difference is height.  The shorter Aruncus aethusifolius is a diminutive member of the group that looks nice in the foreground or on the edge of a shady or partly shaded garden. Aruncus 'Guinea Fowl' is an Aruncus of medium stature.  Aruncus  'Horatio' is the tallest of the three we are growing at present.  They are all very low maintenance.  Cutting off dead flower stalks down to the base after flowering results in a mound of beautiful ferny foliage the remainder of the year.  The entire plant should be cut down in fall or very early spring. A very showy group to add interest to your spring garden!
